Winter in Yellowstone

January 5-13, 2025

Yellowstone – the world’s first national park. A park recognized globally for its bizarre natural wonders and incredible wildlife viewing, Yellowstone is like no other place on earth. On this photography workshop, you will join me for an 9-day excursion into the heart of Yellowstone, where we will have the opportunity to photograph American bison, wolves, coyotes, bighorn sheep, bald eagles, red foxes, elk and much more as they fight to survive the bitter, cold winter that grips this region of the Rockies. This will be a masterclass in cold-weather photography, and with so many of America’s large mammals roaming the Yellowstone landscape, we will have no shortage of subjects to practice on. By the end of this workshop, you will not only have a diverse array of photos of iconic mammals in the snow, but you will be a better wildlife photographer with a deeper understanding of both the technical and artistic aspects of wildlife photography.

Basic Itinerary

Day 1: Your adventure will begin in Bozeman, Montana, where you fly into and stay in a hotel for a night before being picked up by me the next day.

Day 2: I will pick you up from the hotel and we will travel south to Gardiner, Montana, where we will enjoy a privately-catered dinner and orientation session to discuss the camera gear you brought, the way in which we plan to create photos during this workshop, and the critical concepts you must understand to successfully photograph wildlife in the snow.

Days 3-5: For the next 3 days of our expedition, we will explore Yellowstone’s Northern Range. This is the most wildlife-rich area of the park, and each winter, the ever-deepening snow pushes wildlife down into the valley bottoms of the Northern Range, putting our subjects closer to the road and making them easier to photograph. While in this area of the park, we could encounter bison, wolves, bighorn sheep, elk, coyotes, red foxes, river otters, owls, pine martens, ermine, mule deer, moose, pronghorn… should I go on?

We will end Day 5 with a catered dinner and mid-trip image critique/post-processing session, where I can give each of you one-on one assistance at the computer with your photos pulled up, and we will discuss what you are doing right, what we can work to improve upon, and what you can change to capture even better photos over the next 3 days of the trip.

Days 6-8: Bright and early the next morning, we will voyage into the interior of Yellowstone aboard a privately chartered snowcoach. This is, in my humble opinion, the most exciting, unique, and breathtaking way to explore Yellowstone. Less than 100 snowcoaches enter the park’s interior each day, and we will have one of those all to ourselves. We will be able to travel wherever we would like in the interior, and will often be the only people present while photographing wildlife. This is such an amazing way to experience and photograph this park, and we get to do it for 3 full days. We might encounter and photograph bison, wolves, coyotes, red foxes, river otters, owls, pine martens, ermine, eagles, trumpeter swans, and, if we’re lucky, even bobcats. If it’s cold enough, we will attempt to find bison hanging out in thermal areas, where we will try and capture those iconic frosty bison images you see all over social media.

Day 9: I will take you back to Bozeman, where we will go separate ways, departing with good memories and full memory cards :)
